yes exactly ...

you can do b) at least partly if  you have an RRA at STEP interval
a number of consolidation functions will store the base values
there (at least AVG, MAX, MIN will) so you can use this as input
for the new consolidation function ... otherwhise certainly it
should be UNKN ...
