The example script I provided lacked a start and end time for
rrdtool graph. See my follow up.

The bug has been found and fixed.  It was in rrd_graph.c, and there's
no difference between 1.2.21 and 1.2.23:

$ diff 1.2.21/src/rrd_graph.c 1.2.23/src/rrd_graph.c
