Just out of curiosity: Do you have any specific use-case in mind? Since
the client interface is compiled into librrd (which makes that combined
work subject to terms of the GPL), a user could not make use of librrd
but would rather have to include rrd_client.[ch] in her own source tree.

Both, the LGPL (2.1+) or (2-clause) BSD/MIT license, would be fine for
me, while I somewhat prefer a BSD style license over the LGPL.
