You want to monitor different protocols?

I've successfuly done it on Bay routers by setting up traffic filters which 
don't drop/accept packets, just count them.  The packet counts are accessible 
via SNMP, and the filters are fairly obvious.

(except maybe ftp - read rfc1576(or nearby!), or just monitor traffic from 
port 20).
