[rrd-users] No RRDs.so on make install

I finally have RRDtool building without complaint, but I still
get an error on 'make install':

...
/usr/bin/install -c -d -m 755 /usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.17/lib/perl/auto/RRDs
/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 perl-piped/RRDp.pm
/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.17/lib/perl
/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 perl-shared/RRDs.pm
/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.17/lib/perl
/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 perl-shared/blib/arch/auto/RRDs/RRDs.bs
/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.17/lib/perl/auto/RRDs
/usr/bin/install -c -m 755 perl-shared/blib/arch/auto/RRDs/RRDs.so
/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.17/lib/perl/auto/RRDs
/usr/bin/install: perl-shared/blib/arch/auto/RRDs/RRDs.so: No such
file or directory
make[2]: *** [install-data-local] Error 1
make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

Indeed, perl-shared/blib/arch/auto/RRDs/ only contains:

.exists      RRDs.bs      RRDs.bundle

Any ideas why this might be?
