you could just use/adapt rrdlastds...

 bash% rrdlastds -a -c 424 -l "b/s" UWMad-NapNet.rrd
 Wed Feb  9 10:45:00 2000  72.37 Mb/s input  55.11 Mb/s output

...see the contrib dir (as of 1.0.11, I'm told.)
