[rrd-users] Using and integrating rrdtool with MRTG

I have plain mrtg 2.8.12 running currently.  
I have installed mrtg 2.9.2 and rrdtool as well as replacement.
Anyone has any tips and solutions to gotchas in using rrdtool.
I could not get any graphs at all everytime I ran indexmaker.
I followed all integration notes on the web site.
Anybody has clues and other tips. 
I appreciate all the help.
