[rrd-users] about the image per memory return problem

In a previous mail I have sketched out what I think would be the
solution to the problem of not being able to easily access the
image data generated by rrdtool. Having to store everything to disk
first does not seem to be ideal ...

Looking at newer versions of gdlib, I see that it is possible to
use the gdImagePngPtr function in order to get direct access to the
image data without writing it to disk. Unfortunately the newer gds
do not support Gif anymore. And the version I use in rrdtool can
not be easily modified to generate in memmory copies of images. In
short adding this feature properly would require to upgrade gd, and
this in turn would make gif writing capability vanish from rrdtool.

In short adding this feature will have to wait for the 1.1 series
where we can break compatibility and completely drop the gif stuff
...

cheers
tobi
