That's what you probably want, yes.  Try doing "man rrddump" and then
dumping one of the files you want to expand and messing around with it.

It prints it out as XML, more or less hierarchically structured. You'll
basically be adding a new "column" to the matrix, all values set to
unknown initially.  

I'm not sure if anybody's yet written a tool that just *does* it.
