If you use DERIVE, the counter can go back and forward. That means
wrap-around calculation isn't there, you just receive a negative
number.  Now, if you don't allow negative numbers by setting the
minimum allowed value to 0, you get a NaN instead.

Et voila, exactly what you wish :)
