Alex,
  Thank you for your comments.
I should have made it clearer. I simply did a dump/restore on the SAME
system,
namely OPenBSD, which generated the error on the restore.
Subsequently, I started the collection on the SPARC. The dump/restore
worked fine there.
I suspect that OpenBSD has a problem with undefined values, since I
corrected the min values that should have been "U", but were shown as
unprintables in the .xml file. Now the problem has shown up elsewhere.
I would still like to migrate the rdds from the OPenBSD to the SPARC.
I am considering a script thst would "rrdtool fetch", followed by an
"rrdtool update"
into an existing .rrd created by cricket. Of course ther would have to
be some
hacking of the original cricket .rrd file.

[snip problems about dump/restore]

Perhaps there's something changed over time. Are you using the same
rrdtool version on both platforms?

The dump/restore mechanism should work however if the format has changed
(it probably did so many times) it may be possible that you run into
problems. It shouldn't happen but it might.

Try dump and restore on each platform, so restore a dumped file on the
same platform. If that works out properly and if you don't have a
version difference, you've discovered a bug.

cheers.
