Why?

DEF:val1=/path/to/database1.rrd:....
DEF:val2=/otherpath/to/other/xyz.rrd:...
DEF:val3....
....

CDEF:total=val1,val2,val3,.....+,+

That will work.  And then you buy a new device and have to do it
all over again.  And again.
