On a follow up
When I do rrdtool dump
I get those inside the file
 <!-- PDP Status -->
                <last_ds> 1000 </last_ds>
                <value> 0.0000000000e+00 </value>
                <unknown_sec> 14 </unknown_sec>
        </ds>

        <ds>
                <name> ds1 </name>
                <type> COUNTER </type>
                <minimal_heartbeat> 600 </minimal_heartbeat>
                <min> 0.0000000000e+00 </min>
                <max> 2.5600000000e+05 </max>

                <!-- PDP Status -->
                <last_ds> 2000 </last_ds>
                <value> 0.0000000000e+00 </value>
                <unknown_sec> 14 </unknown_sec>

Why it takes the values as the time stamps of last_ds ????
