[rrd-users] manual work

Hello all
I have been trying to use rrdtools to manually update and fetch information 
from rrd archives.
Well
I use the commands.
rrdtool update FILENAME.rrd N:1000:2000
to update ds0 and ds1
then I do 
rrdtool fetch FILENAME.rrd AVERAGE --start now
I get nans !!!
what I am doing wrong ??
I think I doing as said in the tutorials.
