Try it, you'll like it.

In that case: stay away from the dump file and study more.

To study:  dump a file to xml and edit this dump.
Remove all lines that start with a time stamp; inside all <rra> and </rra>
Compare the remainder to the output of rrdtool info

This should have read:

change options, dump, restore,    sorry

1) Change the settings of your database using rrdtool tune (RTFM)
2) Dump the database into an xml file
3) Restore the database from that xml file, using the option
   that tells restore to check ranges
