kernel 2.2.X - ipchains;
kernel 2.4.X - iptables;

(easy access to iptables accounting policy ...)[2.4.X kernel]
... until you figure it out how to turn directly iptables to work for

... i suggest moving towards 2.4.X kernels... better policy routing/better
managing & ... iptables
