I would be interested to know if you or anyone knows how to populate an
rrd on the fly.  I have never seen this as an option.  If it's in the
doc I've never seen it.

Jayson,

You should be able to populate it on the fly.  But, you can 
always define an RRA that is not lossy.  I have all my 
RRDs set up with the average RRAs as well as a "non-lossy" 
5 minute RRA that has been extended to 1 year.  We back 
these RRDs up at the end of the year.  At this point, I've 
got 5 years worth of 5 minute data, and regularly do 
long-term analysis of our bandwidth consumption.
