Jeremy,
        You can install the SunStudio as a "Demo" and get the compiler.  I 
had to do this, but I still have an error when compiling.  I was about to 
submit to this group to see if anyone has seen the same.  It looks like 
you are on the same path I was.  I had the same error before I installed 
the demo.

Hello Gang,
 I'm looking for rrdtool 1.2.x binary built for Solaris 9 on Sparc. I
tried to compile it, received an error, and from the web pages I've
looked at it seems that my error is because I don't have the SPARCworks
C compiler. Since I can't get it, I need to find a binary, the current
sunfreeware site only has 1.0. Just in case anyone is curious, the error
I'm receiving is: /usr/ucb/cc:  language optional software package not
installed
