OK, I just pulled the 21-Sep-2005 svn snapshot from:

        http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/pub/beta/?M=D

It seems to be version 1.2.11.  Anyway, I compiled it against:

        cgilib-0.5-r1
        zlib-1.2.3
        libart_lgpl-2.3.17
        freetype-2.1.9-r1
        libpng-1.2.8

And I got the same results when I ran my tests.  The test commands I
used are as indicted on my webpage:

        http://www.fuzzy-elves.org/rrd/

(I, of course, changed the path to rrdtool in order to use the rrdtool I
just compiled.)

Here are the actual results:

$ time ./slow.new 
13057x179

real    0m2.149s
user    0m2.115s
sys     0m0.035s

$ time ./fast.new 
13057x179

real    0m0.218s
user    0m0.191s
sys     0m0.027s

What next?  Would you like some strace output or anything?  Please let
me know, and thanks for looking at this!
