My friend and I wrote this perl script a long time ago:

http://divisionbyzero.net/~brad/code/http_ping.txt

Download it, rename it to http_ping and chmod +x it..  Should work if
you've install Time::HiRes.

Output looks exactly like ping, and includes the option to fetch images.
