the 'problem' is that rrdtool stores its data according to a fixed
interval based on 1970-01-01 00:00 GMT. Since you can enter data at
will, rrdtool will make sure the numbers it stores are adjusted so
that the space below the 'curve' stays the same as what was covered
by your original data.
