the 'problem' is pango, the component who does the font
rendering for rrdtool. as it is started it figures out which font
to pick ... this can take some time ... there are three things you
can do:

* have fewer fonts

* make sure you are running the latest pango and fontconfig

* let the same instance of rrdtool create multiple graphs since the
  font selection impact is only on the first graph ...

259 fonts is not really excessive, it is just that when the whole
font searching has to be done for every graph which is the case
when you restart rrdtool every time will take it's toll.
