Good question: linux, ext3, I have plenty of files bigger than 2GB there.

It looks like some kind fo pointer error in rrdtool.
Either way, it clearly looks like rrdtool is actually allocating the entire
amount of RAM used by the RRD file at creation time at least, and that it
just fails to allocate more than 2GB on a 32bit CPU, which wouldn't be
unheard of.

For now, I've just trimmed my file to be just below 2GB.
