The smokeping daemon (which runs constantly) does the periodic data collection. Do you have it running?
There is no need of a cron job.

I must be missing something really obvious.  I get graphs that are all
0s.  And then I realized... since there's no cron job that would
periodically collect data, I'm not sure how I expected there to be
anything in the first place!  And I don't see anything in the docs about
a cron job.  So... what obvious item am I missing? :-)
