This is by design and is documented in the configuration guide; section
names must match /[-_0-9a-zA-Z]+/. The period character is used as a
hierarchy separator in the web front end, and thus cannot be used in
individual names.

Squeeze is in 'testing' for a reason. ;) File a bug report with the
package maintainers.
