Just as another data point: we are considering changing our measurements
to send 1 ping *per second* *per device* - for some 100-odd devices, this
might sound like a lot on "raw packet statistics", but it's still well
below 100kbit/s - and we're talking gbit and 10gbit infrastructure, so
hardly visible unless you look.

(No, we're not doing this with smokeping, as anything that needs to fork
off external jobs to do this won't get this done the way we hope it'll
turn out - we'll write something ourselfs with one "send packets at regular 
intervals" process and one "look what's coming back, and make real-time
statistics from it" process)
