That would have been me.  I wrote something similar to:
Try running mrtg more often, say every two minutes.  If this helps you
may want to switch to rrdtool.

This is because rrdtool is much more efficient when it comes to usage
of resources.

However, it is not magic.  If you can't get the stats from the device
you don't have to bother trying rrdtool either.
