ok, here are the steps...
mrtg-2.8.8> make
/usr/local/bin/perl -0777 -pi -e 's@^#!\s*/\S*perl@#!
/usr/local/bin/perl@' run/cfgmaker run/cfgmaker_ip
run/indexmaker run/mrtg

/usr/local/bin/perl -0777 -pi -e
's@(day|week|month|year|peri.)\.(png|gif)@$1.gif at g'
run/mrtg run/indexmaker

and then I did...
mrtg-2.8.8> run/cfgmaker
Undefined subroutine &main::snmpmapOID called at
run/cfgmaker line 26.

what does this mean?

And I did a
mrtg-2.8.8> find . -name mrtg.cfg - print
./contrib/TCH/mrtg.cfg
./contrib/mrtgmk/src/mrtg.cfg
./contrib/stat/mrtg.cfg

do I need to edit the ? also, I don't quite understand
the doc/config.html file.
mrtg-2.8.8> vi ./contrib/stat/mrtg.cfg ,
