its to specify a higher defualt timeout.

see http://ee-staff.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/config.html#Target
then the section under that talks about the timeout.  its says defualt
is 2 seconds.  the format is
community at router[:port[:timeout[:retries[:backoff]]]].  it says if you
dont change defualts, then it can be left out, and trailing colons are
omitted.  thus, public at 10.29.48.48::4 is supposed to change the defualt
timeout to 4 seconds.  but whenever i try putting in larger timeouts, it
doesnt appear to be actually affecting anything.  i get the same error
when i leave it out, too.
