Neil,

I have the same problem on mrtg-2.8.9-2mdk for Linux-Mandrake.

However, if you update the Index.html file to use png instead of gif
files, I have gotten it work properly.  If this is the standard, could
some one please update the Manual.html or FAQ for installs for us?
