If you want to hack this yourself, you need to change rateup.
Only after you've modified this you can think about adding an option
to MRTG which will use that modification.
IMHO you're better of by using rrdtool. You can then write a script
that does exactly what you want. Start using rrdtool by using 14all,
then write your own graph-script.
