[mrtg] gdImageGif not in GD 1.8.3 prevents MRTG from compiling

Looks like MRTG cannot be built (?) in conjunction with GDLIB 1.8.3.
Furthermore, no earlier versions of GDLIB are available online --
due to legal issues . . . (see GD readme.txt).

According to the GD readme.txt:

  "Existing code will need modification to call
  gdImagePng or gdImageJpeg instead of gdImageGif."


However, I do not understand why I also get the gdImagePng error below?

Output snipit from running MRTG configure command:

  checking for gdImageGif in -lgd... no
  checking for gdImagePng in -lgd... no


I find this interesting as the MRTG Unix installation guide
at http://ee-staff.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/unix-guide.html
shows examples with GD 1.8.3:

 wget http://www.boutell.com/gd/http/gd-1.8.3.tar.gz
 gunzip -c gd-1.8.3.tar.gz |tar xf -
 mv gd-1.8.3 gd
 cd gd
-----

Quickly scanning the news group about this offers no solutions (?)
except finding an older version of GD (which I am pursuing). However,
there seems to be a serious roadblock here.

I apologize if this is already an old topic. Just coming back to
MRTG after some time away.
