You might want to try looking at a packet sniffer.
You can get tcpdump for unix that will show you what's going on, although a
gui based sniffer with decodes will make things easier to understand.
Etherpeek by AGGroup (now WildPackets) should be available on a 30day trial
from www.wildpackets.com - this should be sufficient to tell you what's
going on (runs on Mac or Windows)
