Perhaps I don't quite understand these last three lines but I think you
are talking about one server doing the web hosting while the other
server generates images.  If so: why do it this hard ...

IMHO it is best to setup more than one server, each one doing all stuff
including the web server.  For instance, an enterprise with multiple
sites could have one server per site.  Of course you can still have one
box collecting backups, daily graphs generated at midnight etcetera.
