A sleeping process may be waiting for something to happen, such
as SNMP returning a value. If the system says it is sleeping,
this doesn't mean that the program isn't running. It is just
pausing as there's nothing to do but to wait.
Tons of lock files is quite normal when there are tons of processes.
If (one of) your devices are slow or don't respond at all, it may take
a long time to figure this out.
I don't have a solution for you and cannot help you any further but
perhaps you can restart troubleshooting now.
