Instead of writing your own collector, you can use cricket (frontend for
rrdtool) and also rrdtool. This works for shorter cycles than 5 minutes.
There is information on how to setup polling for 1 minute in the
cricket-users archive. It is called "1 min_ polling & max graphs". It worked
great for me. Hope this helps.

    The answer is: MRTG can't.  Unless you want to recode rateup.c and
the MRTG perl script.  If you need a shorter interval, use RRDTOOL and
write your own collector.
