Hello,

I am doing some netwrok experiments on some internet paths and I need to
know what is the link utlization and capacity of a particular link.
For some time, I have been using
been using MRTG graphs to get these values. I obtain the capacity of the
link from the description of the interface at the begining of the webpage
and the utilization from the graph itself.

Lately, I realize that these MRTG grpahs graphs ( for the 5 min avergae )
show the maximum inbound/outbound traffic to be more than the
capacity of the link itself.
This left me wondering how reliable are these values from MRTG graphs and
I realized that I needed to know exactly how MRTG plots the graph.

I just know that MRTG uses SNMP to query the mib variables from the
network devices. I am not clear about exactly what varibales does it query
and how does it plot the graph .
Also, is the description of the interface just above these graphs queried
from the network device or is it a static value in the webpage ?

I would be great if someone could share their knowledge with me or point
me to where I could find more info about it ( my last resort would be to
read the code ;-( ).

Thanks,

The real problem is what to do with the problem-solvers after the problems are
solved.
