Both are limitations in MRTG. Both are overcome in RRDtool.
My suggestion to you is to download and compile RRDtool (to be found at
http://ee-staff.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/ ) and read my
tutorial.
You can use RRDtool as a back end to MRTG however in that case you
won't solve your problem. When you try another front end, or when
you write your own (believe me, this isn't hard to do!) you will get
the desired reports.
When you decide to do the data collection and graphing using a script
it isn't MRTG anymore; therefore you need to subscribe and use the
rrdtool-users mailing list for any questions you might have. Before
you write to that list make sure to have read the tutorial.
