[mrtg] [conf check - please help] mrtg, cisco snmp v2

I'd like a confirmation of my line of thought and test before opening a bug
case with cisco (sticking foot in mouth ecc.)

I'm trying to set up mrtg with snmp v2 for the first time (with v2, not mrtg
that is).
With snmp v1 everything is ok.
With snmp v2 (1:community at hostname:::::2) on the interface configs snmp
complains for

WARNING: Expected a number but got '#<unprintable BER type 0x81>'

On the router debug snmp packets, debug snmp headers prints:

Note the NO_SUCH_INSTANCE_EXCEPTION - when trying to get the same info with
snmpv1 that lines read something like

 ifEntry.10.1 = 51444420
 ifEntry.16.1 = 19140834

which seems more reasonable.
As a matter of fact I think mrtg is correct:

[mrtg]$ snmpwalk -v 2c -On hostname public ifXEntry
..blah blah..

No ifHCInOctets (6) or ifHCOutOctets (10) here! Either something in my setup
is wrong or those oids are missing.
Setup is

Ios C3620-IK8S-M 12.2(7b) (far to new for my taste but unfortunately
neccesary)
mrtg-2.9.17
UCD-snmp version: 4.2.4.pre3

router conf:
snmp-server location yadda
snmp-server contact somebody
snmp-server chassis-id someid
snmp-server host 10.1.1.90 version 2c community

Any comments ?
