It used to be possible; I didn't check recently.  You need to call
rateup directly, not mrtg or another program.

The command line options to rateup are not documented as well as
they should be (last time I checked anyway) so what I did was build
a wrapper around rateup.  This wrapper wrote the options to a logfile
(*not* the mrtg log file!) and from there it was easy to spot what
mrtg was doing.

Just remove the images, call mrtg (which in turn calls your wrapper),
view the logfile.
