Erm... rephrase please? I do understand that something is obvious but
I'm missing what is :)

Always check, using snmpget, that the device is reporting correctly. If
this doesn't work, MRTG cannot be expected to work.

No pun intended but are you getting numbers that don't vary?

snmpwalk device comm.string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2
For each of the reported instances do the following:
snmpget device comm.string \
.1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.x .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.16.x
sleep 30
snmpget device comm.string \
.1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.x .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.16.x
Each time you should get a result; it should be more the second time.
Edit the config file by hand and use the 'Target[x]: 1:public at host' format.
Check that you can use snmp v1 or alter the config file so that it uses v2.
