I keep all my MRTG configs in /usr/local/etc/mrtg. When I install a given
version of MRTG, I install it to /usr/local/mrtg-2.9.17, for example, and
symlink from /usr/local/mrtg to that directory. All of my scripts and
configs and crontabs point to /usr/local/mrtg. When I install a new version
of MRTG, I install it to /usr/local/mrtg-2.9.25, for example. Then I run
something like the following command:

rm /usr/local/mrtg ; ln -s /usr/local/mrtg-2.9.25 /usr/local/mrtg

An upgrade like this requires some watching but is mostly seamless.

best regards,
James
