Please try this:
   PATH="" /root/qpeek.pl
(or any other way of setting PATH to empty).

If that works (as in: it returns numbers) reroute its output to a file
and run it through od -tx1

3rd test:  create another test program as follows:

   #!/bin/bash
   echo 22001
   echo 22544
   echo 144

(adjust path and shell if necessary)
and use that in stead of qpeek.pl
