[mrtg] Upgrade

I use MRTG on a Windows Box. In general, MRTG is stand alone on
Windows. I keep my configs and working directories outside of my MRTG
directory and reference them explicitly. Then I rename my MRTG folder
(that contains all of the files for MRTG) to MRTG.<version> and then
extract the new version to MRTG. Backup your Data and Config dirs just
in case the worst should happen. Then when your scheduled task calls
MRTG, it should be using the new version. If you see adverse
performance or unexpected stuff, simply delete MRTG and remove the
version info from you old working install. Once you have satisfied
yourself that the new version is working, you can jettison the old
version.
You end up with:
<Drive>:\MRTGData # Location of your workdir
<Drive>:\MRTGConfig # Location of all your configs files
<Drive>:\MRTG.2.11.1 # Location of old working MRTG
<Drive>:\MRTG # Location of current MRTG

I've never used MRTG on Windows, but in general, you can uninstall and
then, install the new version without any problem. The only thing is to
be sure the uninstaller does not delete neither your config file nor
your mrtg files (.log, .html, etc).
In fact, last time I upgraded MRTG I just uninstalled the current
version, Installed the new one and done. If you do that in less than
5min, you can barely see that something happened in your graphics.
What I did:
i. I stopped the system to call MRTG every 5min (crond in unix,
programmed tasks in windows I think).
ii. Unistall
iii. Install the new version
iv. I set back my crond to call again mrtg every 5min.
Luis Carlos.
