First question is whether you are using RRDTool or Native Log format.
Merging is much, much simpler if you are using RRDTool.
If Using RRDTool, first you need to convert your RRD files to the
destination system format. Dump them to XML (rrdtool dump) on the source
system, then import back to RRD files on the destination (rrdtool import).
This will get you two RRD files; your historical one, and your new one (if
you had done this right at the beginning, of course, you'd just be able to
put the historical one in place and continue to use that).
To merge the new and old files, there are several tools available. If you
download the latest version of Routers2, then the rrdmerge.pl script in the
extras directory will merge any number of RRD files to a single file.
If you're using the old log file format, then I don't know of any tools for
merging; however it is plain text and so you should just be able to copy it
for mthe source system to the destination system, and with a bit of
scripting can probably merge them yourself.

Subject: [mrtg] migrating MRTG
I'm moving MRTG from a solaris box to a linux (centos 6) server, running
mrtg 2.17.4 as a fresh installation.
It's all working fine BUT . I would rather like the old history from the
previous server to be migrated too, so that we get the full last-year-graph
as well.
I've tested an idea for the cpu logs we have by concatenation the old file
beneath the new file. but while I can see from the epoch dates in it the
logged data is "there" it doesn't result in a yearly/monthly file etc.
What need I be doing to achieve this?
Cheers
ian
