I've had a number of people point this out to me, always quoting the same part
of the manual :)
As it turns out, I *was* using heartbeats of 6000 at one point but was having
the same problem. I've since changed it to 8000 and it seems to be working as
advertised now. Thanks to everyone who smacked me upside the head. I
apparently needed it. :)
