Unless I'm missing something here it looks pretty common.  I mean by this
that there doesn't seem to be any special tricks or so.

Don't try to build the somewhat more complicated graphs right away.  Start
simple (for instance using the tutorial) then modify your scripts one item
at a time.

If there is a specific thing you want to know just ask.  Mind however
that this list is not about retrieving the numbers.  It is about processing
them by rrdtool.
