You are trying to do three things simultaniously.

1) It seems as if you're using a system that isn't very common (or at
   least: the representation of "not a number" isn't.  There may be
   issues with rrdtool that are not yet addressed to
2) You are trying to learn how to use RRDtool
3) You are trying to learn how to process and show something else than
   network traffic out of an interface counter

My advice is to start slow.  The tutorial may help.  When you know that
rrdtool works as expected and you know that you know that, start thinking
about iostat et al.

A good starting point *could be* to implement mrtg and let rrdtool do
the backend for it.  Using examples from the tutorial you should be
able to 
a) graph the information
b) use the debugging tools such as rrdtool dump, rrdtool info
