[rrd-users] Re: Inconsistent results when polling lots of devices

Thanks for the response Woody....

A little test (with 1500 byte ICMP packets):

100 packets transmitted, 98 received, 2% loss, time 99221ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 5.438/5.975/13.553/0.987 ms

We have huge bandwidth up until the last hop and the last hop is 10Mbit/sec.

I suspect if I try a single target config to the bum target then it will
work fine. (I've had similar problems with some other Extreme kit when I was
polling a large number of metrics. Decreasing the forking seemed to work in
that case.)

I'll set the system to not fork at all for that config file and see what
happens.

Thanks

SM

Hi Simon,

Are the suspect targets very remote? Packet loss is definitely a
possibility. Not necessarily close to the system but closer to the
target. Are you monitoring ifDiscards in the path? What does ping look
like to the target ip, any packet loss?

Also have you tried running a single config for a bum target? This would
help determine if it is a system process related issue, which I'm
inclined to think it is not, but....

BTW, I also get those errors occasionally just not as consistently to a
single target as you.

Cheers,
Woody...
