Sorry for being vague. Of course I have an idea what I'm doing. But the
RRD files are bound to interface numbers instead of being bound to port
names.

When you switch ports for whatever reason or do an upgrade from FE to GE
for instance and do forget to cp/mv the correspondent RRD file then you
have to merge the old with the new one to get a continous history.
